The Revive band is a wearable opioid overdose detection device that contains a pulse oximeter. The device will read specific vital signs and when those vitals go below the threshold that would be indicative of an overdose.
How Bluetooth Transmitters Work
Understanding the functionality of a Bluetooth transmitter is straightforward, largely owing to advanced technology like Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS). Essentially, the transmitter converts signals into secure and efficient radio waves via FHSS, a technology that rapidly switches frequencies to deter unauthorized interception.
After converting the data into radio waves, the transmitter sends these to a receiver. The receiver reverses this action, converting the radio waves back into data signals.
A GPS (Global Positioning System) module calculates its location by communicating with at least four orbiting satellites. The module sends a signal, which the satellites respond to with their location and timestamp. The time it takes for the signal to travel back allows the module to determine its distance to each satellite. Using a method called trilateration, it then calculates its precise latitude, longitude, and sometimes altitude. Some modules also use Assisted GPS (A-GPS), incorporating data from Wi-Fi and terrestrial radio signals for enhanced accuracy. By continuously updating this process, the module offers real-time location data for various applications like smartphones, automobiles, and drones.
Centralized Monitoring Services continuously receive "proof of life" signals, indicating that the user is in a stable condition. Should a pulse oximeter detect low oxygen levels, a "high alert" is immediately activated. This critical alert can be communicated through multiple channels for maximum reliability:
Bluetooth to Smartphone Application: If the user's phone is within proximity, the high alert is transmitted to the Centralized Monitoring Service's dedicated app.
Via Satellite through GPS Unit: In the absence of a smartphone, the high alert is sent directly via a GPS unit, which communicates through satellite technology to pinpoint the user's exact location.
Upon receiving this high alert, the system initiates a protocol to dispatch a first responder, who is equipped to administer Narcan for opioid overdose reversal. This multi-faceted approach ensures rapid and accurate emergency response, potentially saving lives.
